Speech Therapy After A Stroke

Choose an Assessment

Start with a chart review. Look for clues by reviewing brain imaging, MD notes (neuro deficits? facial droop?), speech therapy notes, etc. Interview the patient and care partners to learn their goals and priorities.

Choose an Assessment

Do an Oral Motor Assessment

Look for strength, ROM, speed, and symmetry of the mandible, lips, tongue, & velum. If abnormal, proceed with a swallowing (and maybe also a dysarthria) assessment.

Do an Oral Motor Assessment

Assess & Screen

Complete appropriate assessments based on your chart review, patient interview, and OME results. You may assess swallowing, language, motor speech, cognition, fluency, and/or voice.
