Speech Therapy After A Stroke
Choose an Assessment
Start with a chart review. Look for clues by reviewing brain imaging, MD notes (neuro deficits? facial droop?), speech therapy notes, etc. Interview the patient and care partners to learn their goals and priorities.

Do an Oral Motor Assessment
Look for strength, ROM, speed, and symmetry of the mandible, lips, tongue, & velum. If abnormal, proceed with a swallowing (and maybe also a dysarthria) assessment.

Assess & Screen
Complete appropriate assessments based on your chart review, patient interview, and OME results. You may assess swallowing, language, motor speech, cognition, fluency, and/or voice.

Make Recommendations, Educate & Refer Out
Share your recommendations and educate about deficits you saw. Teach helpful strategies. Refer out as needed!

Treat!
Focus treatment on how the changes in their abilities affect their life. Keep their personal goals front of mind.
